ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2018-2019 AAU Volleyball season wrapped up with its pinnacle event, the 46th AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships. The 12-day event began with a star studded Opening Ceremonies on Saturday, June 15 and ended with a battle for the World Championship title on Friday, June 28.
Games took place on 184 courts across the North and South Halls of the award-winning Orange County Convention Center, as well as pool play and awards matches at ESPN Wide World of Sports. The overall event set another record, boasting 2,805 girls and boys teams from across 47 states, including an international division with teams from Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Germany, Puerto Rico and Slovenia.
“The experience walking into ESPN Wide World of Sports was just so cool, because you really can’t get that anywhere else so it was awesome,” said Sydney Taylor from Mintonette Sports m. 61, the 17 Premier National Champion.
AAU Volleyball continues to grow as the largest sport in the Amateur Athletic Union, and that status was achieved through the 45,000 athletes, 10,000 coaches, 600 college coaches and approximately 100,000 spectators in attendance this year. Over 345 top notch teams were given awards for their respective divisions, while 39 teams were crowned as National Champions. The Championship day was topped off with a bout for the title of World Champion with the 17U Open Champion Mintonette Sports m.71 against the International Champion Dominican Republic, with latter team emerging victorious for the second year in a row. A full list of standings can be found here.
“The competition has been amazing. It is high level. Every team that you play is high level and very energetic. The parents are energetic, so the fans are a lot of fun. The competition cannot be beat or paralleled. We love it. Every single match is do or die and that’s a competition I want my team to play in,” said Coach Jenn, OTVA 15 O. Jenn.
For the third year in a row, AAU partnered with The Side-Out Foundation as part of its AAU Cares initiative. The Dig Pink dig-a-thon challenged all participating teams to raise money for stage IV breast cancer research. A tremendous thank you to those teams that participated this year.
Another valuable partnership that AAU ventured into this year, making the event more of a premier destination for the whole family, was with the United States eSports Federation (USeF). The launch of eSports at the AAU Junior Volleyball Championships occurred on the Allied eSports’ HyperX eSports Truck, North America’s first mobile eSports arena and production studio. The Truck, set up just outside the concourse, beckoned athletes and their families to try their skills in several popular video games.
