CHICAGO, Ill. (December 1, 2022) – Thank you Chi-Town for showing out! Four hundred eighty-four (484) teams from around the country traveled to downtown Chicago with hopes of going home with some gold. Sixteen teams in total ended the weekend with medals to add to their collections.
The first-year event featured 66 courts with two (2) championship courts. With teams coming from California, Florida, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and more, this was one of the premier events of the season. College scouts were also in attendance to check out the action.
The Chi-Town Boys Challenge was a three day boys event co-hosted by Junior Volleyball Association (JVA) and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Teams were split up into age-based groups: 12-year-old, 13-year-old, 14 Open, 14 Premier, 15 Classic, 15 Open, `5 Premier, 16 Classic, 16 Open, 16 Premier, 17 Classic, 17 Open, 17 Premier, 18 Classic, 18 Open, and 18 Premier. The 1st and 2nd place teams in each division were rewarded with a paid entry to the 50th AAU Boys' Junior National Volleyball Championships, taking place in Orlando, Florida from June 30 until July 4, 2023.
Each team that showed up had impressive games. But only a few could standout above the rest. In the 13-year-old division, MVVC 13 Red, out of North Carolina, went 8 and 0 over the weekend without dropping a single set on their way to a championship. Team Rockstar 15 (15 Open), MVVC 15 Black (15 Premier), HPSTL B17 White (17 Classic), and Balboa Bay 17Blue (17 Open) joined MVVC 13 Red as the only teams to go completely undefeated over the course of the tournament.
In one of the best matches of Championship day, Balboa Bay 18 White was able to outlast 630 Volleyball 18-2 to win the championship in the gold bracket of the 18 Premier division. The first set needed extra play with the final score being 26-24 Balboa Bay, while in the second set Balboa was able to claim victory 25-23.
